3 months to go - perfect time to get training
The biggest obstacle mentally and physically to entering a mountain biking event is ‘will I have the fitness level to be competitive and to enjoy it?’
Fortunately - you’re reading this at the perfect moment… in fact, three months is a great time frame to train for the Whaka 100km, 50km or 25km. With lighter days and warmth approaching too, there’s motivation to get amongst the trails as Spring approaches.
However, training effectively and efficiently is key, so we recommend downloading the free training plan for 100km, 50km and 25km distances developed by the Team CP Endurance Coaching Team.
The 12 week training programme features two important sessions to fit in each week, plus two bonus sessions if you’re feeling good and time allows it. There’s a weekly hill session involved to gain strength and longer riding sessions for the weekend.
Time on the bike isn’t the only thing involved too - expect to see body weight strength circuits involving 10 - 20 reps of specific exercises too.
The programme works over a three week cycle with endurance building up each week, followed by a shorter recovery week to bounce back physically and mentally.
One of the key things is to keep it fun and ride with friends and family.
