Vittoria's handmade tyres have been the choice of the pros for decades. They are the world's leading manufacturer of bicycle tyres and have an annual production of more than 7 million tyres.
This year for the 2018 Whaka100 MTB marathon presented by CamelBak, Vittoria are looking for 2 ambassadors to rep Vittoria tyres for the event. The two ambassadors will get free Vittoria G+ tyres, Vittoria TNT tubeless sealer, Vittoria swag and will even pay your Whaka100 entry fee!
We caught up with Graeme Cox about Vittoria tyres and the hunt for the two ambassadors!
Q: What inspired Vittoria to get involved with Whaka100?
A: As a brand Vittoria has been synonymous with road and track racing for many years and is globally the dominant tyre brand in these areas – However Vittoria make also awesome MTB tyres with extremely good design and some technology that is way ahead of our competitors. Things like Graphene and 4c compound rubber – no other brand can offer that. We chose to get involved with the Whaka 100 event to increase our visibility to the off-road community. We know that the organising team at NDuro Events do a fantastic job and the event is always a big success an all levels. It attracts attention both domestically and internationally – and it’s a damn hard event. Anyone who takes part is a legend. The event has a great vibe and we are looking forward to showing everyone our tyres at our expo site…… and to giving some free stuff away.
Q: What is the recommended tyre for the 100km?
A: Tyre selection is critical, and competitors should really select the correct tyre for the conditions.
If it’s dry – Mezcal for sure, it is a popular choice for events here in Rotorua, its real fast and works well in dry to mid-conditions.
If it’s looking uncertain I’d choose the Barzo. It’s more aggressive and a good choice for more bite if it’s a bit wet – certainly on the front.
If it is really wet the new Gato is the way to go – it performs superbly in the wet sloppy stuff – but won’t slow you down between mud holes!
Q: How have you seen cross country racing change over the years?
A: So many ways – the technology so readily available to everyone now is just incredible. Everything is getting wider – there is a big push toward wider tyres. 10 years ago 2.1” wide was pretty normal – now there is a trend to go way wider. At the 2006 World champs here in the Rotorua mud riders were desperate 1.8” mud tyres – now you would struggle to find anything that narrow. Also the tracks nowadays in are typically much better formed, specifically for biking with flowing lines, cambers, berms and construction to allow good drainage in order to maintain a rideable track…..mostly, but I’m sure Tim will find some mud and tricky stuff out there on the course!
Q: How is the hunt for the ambassadors going?
A: We are getting some great response to our quest – tell us why you should be a VITTORIA ambassador on our Facebook page ‘Vittoria NZ’ – a lot from people who are already using our tyres and know how good they are. We will select some ambassadors mid-September and hook them up with Vittoria tyres and free entry to the event – If they have already entered they can give the entry to a mate and encourage them along and compete. Then those ambassadors come and visit us in the Expo, bring their bike with their tyres fitted on and we will give them some more free stuff! What could be better?
Q: What else would you like to share?
A: Ride Vittoria – Ride the Revolution. Come and say hello at the event! Check us out at www.vittoria.com
